President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov examined the progress of the Turkmen lake’s construction
On August 22, President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov made a working trip to the manmade lake "Golden age" located in the center of the Kara kum Desert, for the purpose of familiarizing with the course of realization of the next stage of works on this unique hydrosite.
President of Turkmenistan together with the corresponding heads discussed a course of works on the lake and gave a number of specific instructions to the heads of the ministries and departments on performance of the hydro-technical and nature protection works on the lake "Golden Age". They were charged to develop the coastal territories, cultivate new areas, to raise salt-resistant crops, and also to develop fishery and animal husbandry.
Commissioning of the first stage of this complicated hydrotechnical system took place in 2009. Construction of the lake is divided into three stages. Annually the lake will accumulate billions of cubic meters of the collector and drainage waters that will allow to improve considerably the condition of irrigated lands in all regions, and will help to solve many problems connected with salination of soils, formation of bogs and droughts.
The first stage of lake construction through Kara kum desert included laying of two large drains - Dashoguz runoff stretching for 381 km in all, and also the main collector going for 720 km. The main collector originates in the east of the country, in Lebap province, and goes through the territories of Mary, Ahal and Balkan provinces. These drains bring drainage waters from all territory of the country and flow into the natural hollow known as Garashor located in the north of Kara kum, almost on the crossing of three provinces – Balkan, Dashoguz and Ahal. Capacity of the natural reservoir will make 132 cubic km. Its length – 103 km, width – 18,6 km, average depth – 69 m, and the area of the water mirror - 3460 sq.km.
