On 16 March 2017, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Burkina Faso to the Kingdom of Belgium and Permanent Representative to the European Union Jacqueline Marie Zaba Nikiéma, signed the International Energy Charter.
It follows the signature of Benin, Chad, Mauritania, Niger and Nigeria, and two regional organizations to which Burkina Faso is a member, namely ECOWAS and G5 Sahel. As stated by Ambassador Zaba Nikiéma, Burkina Faso has signed the Charter “with a view to participating in the reinforcement of energy cooperation mutually beneficial among countries”. The increasing participation of African countries in the Energy Charter Process, which aims to build trust and confidence in energy markets, is most welcome and encouraged by the Energy Charter Contracting Parties.
The signing ceremony took place in the context of the Implementation Group and benefited from the interventions of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Turkmenistan to the Kingdom of Belgium, whose country holds the annual Energy Charter Conference chairmanship and Minister Plenipotentiary and Deputy Permanent Representative of the Netherlands to the European Union, whose country is the Depository of the International Energy Charter.
