On March 20, 2017, at the Energy Charter Secretariat in Brussels, the Republic of Kenya signed the International Energy Charter. The document was signed by the Secretary of the Cabinet Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Charles Keter.
Charles Kether highlighted the enormous potential for energy production to meet national demand, the need to promote renewable energy and regional interdependence with Ethiopia and the countries of the East African Community (EAC). Another priority for the country is the construction of an oil pipeline from northern Kenya to the coast.
Kenya is the 83rd participant in the International Energy Charter. The signing of the International Energy Charter reflects Kenya's commitment to the achievement of its national energy goals in accordance with international standards for the promotion and protection of investments. As a new observer country in the Energy Charter, Kenya is involved in key investment, cross-border trade and transit issues that will shape the global energy architecture.
