On November 21, 2016 in Geneva, within the framework of the 59th session of the Committee against Torture, the delegation of Turkmenistan submitted its second periodic report on the implementation of Turkmenistan's commitments undertaken in accordance with the provisions of the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment.
Turkmenistan has acceded to the Convention against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment in April 1999 in accordance with the resolution of the Mejlis of accession number 372-1 dated April 30, 1999.
Turkmenistan, recognizing the primacy of generally recognized norms of international law, has joined or ratified the fundamental international instruments relating to the protection of human rights and freedoms.
During the passing of the meeting, the Turkmen delegation familiarized the participants with the ongoing practical work in Turkmenistan in this area, including the reform of the national legal system, measures to prevent violations of the fundamental provisions of the Convention, to improve the forms and methods of the activities of law-enforcement structures of the country.
Turkmenistan reiterated its commitment to fulfill its international obligations, at the same time, its willingness to further improve the reforms of national legislation aimed at ensuring the rights and freedoms of citizens of Turkmenistan.
