Peacebuilding Commission convened a meeting briefed by the Women Leaders’ Caucus of Central Asia (CAWLC)

Press Statement of the United Nations Peacebuilding Commission on Women leadership for Women, Peace and Security agenda and the role of women in the context of climate change
New York, 16 November 2022
1. On 11 November 2022, the Peacebuilding Commission convened a meeting briefed by the Women Leaders’ Caucus of Central Asia (CAWLC) and its participating States of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan as well as the SRSG for Central Asia and Head of UNRCCA and civil society briefers to discuss and share experiences on women leadership in the implementation of the Women, Peace and Security (WPS) agenda with a special focus on the adverse impact of climate change on women and sustainable peace in Central Asia.
2. The Commission welcomed the engagement of the CAWLC in its effort to bolster the support of regional women associations and networks, rendering core issues pertinent to women’s political, social and economic participation a priority in regional cooperation in Central Asia. In this regard, the Commission encouraged the CALWC to continue its efforts to create opportunities for meaningful women’s political participation and leadership in the region.
3. The Commission recommended further strengthening of multistakeholder collaboration among Central Asian countries, the UN system entities in Central Asia the CALWC and civil society in mitigating the adverse impact of climate change on the situation of women in Central Asia through facilitating women’s equal participation in adaptation measures and access to resources and increasing the leadership of women in socio-economic development, education and culture. The Commission acknowledged the role of UNRCCA in advancing women’s leadership and participation including at the grass-root and community level, strengthening regional cooperation on WPS and bolstering collaborative action in response to negative implications of climate change on women and girls.
4. The Commission expressed its readiness to help sustain international support for regional cooperation in support of national and local efforts to implement the WPS agenda, specifically the efforts on strengthening the role of women in addressing climate change and achieving social cohesion, peacebuilding and sustaining peace in the region.
