Turkmenistan Addresses the United Nations Security Council Briefing on Afghanistan
On 8 June 2026, the Permanent Representative of Turkmenistan to the UN Vepa Hajiyev delivered a statement at the United Nations Security Council briefing under the agenda item “The Situation in Afghanistan”.
In its statement, Turkmenistan noted that, as an immediate neighbour of Afghanistan, it is interested in the earliest possible stabilization of the situation in the country. It was emphasized that peace, security and sustainable development in Afghanistan are of great importance for ensuring stability and prosperity throughout the region.
The Turkmen side highlighted the significance of trade, economic and infrastructure cooperation as one of the key factors for the long-term stabilization of Afghanistan. In this regard, the role of major regional projects implemented with the participation of Turkmenistan was underscored, including the TAPI gas pipeline, the TAP power transmission line, as well as railway and transport initiatives.
It was stressed that these projects are aimed primarily at improving the socio-economic conditions of the Afghan people and should not be viewed through the prism of support for any political forces.
Turkmenistan also reaffirmed the importance of continuing the international dialogue on Afghanistan, including the Doha Process, and advocated practical, balanced and forward-looking approaches in the interests of ensuring peace, stability and sustainable development in Afghanistan and the region as a whole.
