On May 1-7, the Special Representative of the European Union for Central Asia, Amb. Terhi Hakala, visits Turkmenistan.
On May 4, the President of Turkmenistan H.E. Mr. Serdar Berdimuhamedov, during a meeting with the Special Representative, noted the importance of further expanding partnership with the European Union and regarded the current visit as an impetus to the development of cooperation between Ashgabat and Brussels in all dimensions.
On the same day, Ambassador Hakala met with the Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty (upper house of parliament) of Turkmenistan, Mr. Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
During the meeting with the Chairman of the Mejlis (lower house of parliament) Ms. Gulshat Mammedova, the parties discussed current issues of developing effective inter-parliamentary cooperation.
During the visit, meetings were also held with the Foreign Minister, as well as with Deputy Prime Ministers for the oil and gas sector and agriculture.
At the meetings, preparation issues for the upcoming High-Level Political and Security Dialogue between the European Union and the countries of Central Asia on May 17 in Brussels, as well as bilateral and regional cooperation opportunities were particularly discussed.
