On 1 March 2023, the Ambassador of Turkmenistan to Japan, A.Bayramov, met with the Head of the UN-HABITAT Regional Centre for Asia and the Pacific, B.Dercon, in Fukuoka, Japan.
The Turkmen diplomat said that under the leadership of the Esteemed President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov a new smart city Arkadag is planned to open in Turkmenistan in 2023. This project is a practical action of the implementation of the New Urban Agenda adopted at the UN Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III) and the importance of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has been highlighted.
The project is an initiative of the Chairman of the Halk Maslakhaty of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, who noted that the new administrative centre of the Akhal velayat should become a model in terms of both urban culture and safety and ecology and preserve the natural beauty of the construction area.
During the conversation, the Turkmen side noted the important role of UN-Habitat in providing policy and technical support on the transformation of innovative technologies to national, regional and local governments through “The People Centered Smart Cities Flagship Programme”.
In this regard, the Head of the UN-HABITAT Regional Centre confirmed the efforts of member States of this International Organization to achieve sustainable urban development with their innovative transition, applying a multi-level governance strategy to assist in developing skills and opportunities to promote the development, procurement and effective use of modern technology.
