On October 9, 2023, the delegation of Turkmenistan led by the Chairman of the State Migration Service of Turkmenistan A.Sazakov takes part in the 74th session of the Executive Committee of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
During the session, the report of the High Commissioner on the situation of refugees in the world, reports of the Standing Committee on International Protection and related programs, as well as reports and speeches of the represented delegations are considered.
During the speech of the Turkmen side, the importance of close interaction between countries and UN agencies, in particular with UNHCR, was noted in order to resolve issues related to refugees and asylum seekers, their protection and provision of necessary conditions. The head of the delegation informed about the policy pursued by Turkmenistan in this area, the programs being implemented and plans planned for the near future, including a regional conference on the elimination of statelessness planned for 2024.
The comments made by the High Commissioner expressed gratitude to the Government of Turkmenistan for the initiative to hold the upcoming conference and the support provided to the UN in general. In addition, noting that Turkmenistan is the only Central Asian country that has acceded to all Conventions on issues of refugees and statelessness, the High Commissioner focused on the activity and initiative of our country in eradicating statelessness, as well as the significant progress achieved in this direction.
The session will continue its work until October 13 of this year.
