On October 14-15, 2018, a delegation of Turkmenistan headed by Chairwoman of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan took part in the work of the 139th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), which takes place these days in Geneva. On October 14, in the framework of the Assembly of the IPU, the Chairperson of the Mejlis addressed the 28th session of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians. In her speech, the Chairwoman of the Mejlis reported on the strengthening of the legislative framework for the protection and empowerment of women and girls, and its practical implementation in our country.
Along with that, on October 15, the Chairperson of the Mejlis spoke at the high-level segment of the general debate of the 139th Assembly of the IPU, which was entitled “The role of parliament in promoting peace and development in an era of innovation and technological progress”. In her speech, the head of the Turkmen delegation noted that due to the science-based policy of the Head of State, Turkmenistan has created a solid legislative base for scientific and technological progress and innovation, ensuring sustainable economic growth, financial and social stability, timely response to external challenges and changes in the world economic conjuncture.
The Chairwoman of the Mejlis of Turkmenistan met with the Head of the Swiss delegation to the IPU, the chairman of the IPU committee on the rights of parliamentarians, Senator Andrea Caroni, the President of the IPU Gabriela Cuevas Barron and the Secretary-General of the IPU Martin Chungong.
The delegations of 144 countries took part in the work of the 139th Assembly of the IPU, 55 of which were headed by the heads of national parliaments.
