On December 18, 2019, a meeting of the delegation of Turkmenistan with the UNHCR’s Assistant High Commissioner for protection Gillian Triggs took place within the framework of the UN Global Refugee Forum at the UN Geneva Office.
During the meeting, the Turkmen delegation congratulated the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees on the successful high-level organization of the First Global Refugee Forum at the UN Geneva office.
The meeting highlighted the positive experience of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. An exchange of views took place on the successful implementation of the tasks arising from the international obligations undertaken by our country, for the fulfillment of which Turkmenistan is considered one of the exemplary countries. The parties also discussed the effectiveness of the action plan implemented on a systematic basis by the Government of Turkmenistan in close cooperation with the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Speaking about the policy of eradicating statelessness, as one of the priority areas of the migration policy of Turkmenistan, it was noted that Turkmenistan adopted the National Plan of Action for the Elimination of Statelessness for 2019-2024, and, in order to achieve the objectives of this document, in 2019, 863 people of 14 nationalities received citizenship. This, in turn, is an indicator of the successful implementation of the above plan.
At the end of the meeting, the Turkmen side invited a senior delegation of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to participate in the international conference on peace, security and sustainable development, dedicated to the 25th anniversary of Turkmenistan’s permanent neutrality, which will be held in Ashgabat in 2020.
