On January 29, 2022, a regular meeting of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chairmen of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan, heads and representatives of relevant ministries and departments of the country.
In his speech, the Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredov, highlighting the main areas of cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO, once again stressed the need for further expansion of cooperation with this Organization.
The agenda for today's meeting was very busy. Current issues, as well as plans for the coming period, were considered. In this context, the importance of including the Turkmen national skill of making dutar and the art of playing on it, accompanied by singing, to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, as well as the election of the country as a member of the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO for the period 2021-2023, the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological programs for the period 2021-2025 were noted.
It was informed about the ongoing work on the nomination to the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity of the native Turkmen arts, in particular the Akhal-Teke horse breeding and the breeding of the Turkmen Alabay. The issues of expanding cooperation between Turkmenistan and UNESCO within the framework of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network project were also discussed. In particular, the process of entering the capital of Turkmenistan into the UNESCO Global Network of Creative Cities in the creative field "Design" was considered.
In particular, the need to intensify work on the preparation of the relevant nominations of Turkmenistan in the register of the UNESCO Programs "Memory of the World" and "Man and the Biosphere" was expressed.
As is known, the sphere of education and science is one of the important areas of partnership between Turkmenistan and UNESCO. The meeting participants highlighted the importance of expanding cooperation with this Organization in these areas. Organizational issues of creating UNESCO Chairs in a number of universities of Turkmenistan were discussed.
The meeting also considered the Action Plan of the National Commission of Turkmenistan for UNESCO for 2022.
