On April 25, 2022, a conference was held at the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan dedicated to the awarding of the International Certificate to the city of Ashgabat for assistance and contribution to the initiative of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe "Trees in Cities Challenge" through greening campaigns.
The conference was attended by representatives of international organizations working in Turkmenistan, teachers and students of higher educational institutions of the country, as well as representatives of the national media.
UNDP Resident Representative in Turkmenistan Narine Sahakyan, WHO Representative in Turkmenistan Yegor Zaitsev, Rector of the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Djumamyrad Gurbangeldiyev, Vice-Rector of the International University for the Humanities and Development Nurmukhammed Shikhliyev, as well as teachers and students of higher educational institutions of the country spoke at the event.
The speakers noted the fruitfulness of the long-term cooperation between Turkmenistan and the UN, aimed at achieving sustainable development on the planet. In this regard, the special role of joint programs and projects to ensure a high level of environmental safety was highlighted.
As was emphasized, Turkmenistan pays special attention to environmental protection measures, respect for nature and biodiversity conservation. In this context, it was noted that the National Tree Planting Action, held in March this year with the participation of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov, clearly confirms Turkmenistan's commitment to fulfilling its international obligations in the field of ecology.
It was also emphasized that in this direction the National Forest Program is being implemented in the country, within the framework of which landscaping campaigns are being carried out, expanding the area of green plantings in cities and around settlements.
The certificate issued by the UN Under-Secretary-General, the Executive Secretary of the UNECE, is a confirmation of the high appreciation of the efforts of the President of Turkmenistan and our people to protect nature.
