On November 7, 2022, in the building of the Foreign Ministry, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Rashid Meredov held a meeting with the Regional Representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for Central Asia, Ryszard Komenda.
During the meeting, the parties discussed key aspects of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the OHCHR, including the implementation of the obligations assumed and the implementation of the provisions of human rights conventions to which Turkmenistan is a party.
Issues of the activities of the Interdepartmental Commission to ensure the implementation of Turkmenistan's international obligations in the field of human rights and international humanitarian law were considered. At the same time, the country's interest was confirmed to participate in the processes to improve the capacity of the Ombudsman institution, the introduction of educational programs and the holding of regional events.
R. Meredov noted that one of the areas of joint activity is the preparation of records and reports to the UN treaty bodies. In this regard, readiness was expressed to strengthen the potential for interaction on this track.
Thanks were expressed to the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights for their activities in supporting National Human Rights Institutions, primarily the Office of the Ombudsman, including the organization of joint events aimed at promoting human rights education.
During the negotiations, the parties exchanged views on the progress achieved in the dialogue with the UN Special Mandate Holders for Human Rights.
At the end of the meeting, the interest of the Turkmen side in participating in a number of significant events under the auspices of the United Nations, including the implementation of the Call of the UN Secretary General to action in the interests of human rights, 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and 30th anniversary of the Vienna Declaration and Program of Action.
