On 10 September 2024, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan Myahri Byashimova met with Sara Minkara, Special Advisor on International Disability Rights of the U.S. Department of State.
During the meeting, the U.S. State Department delegation was acquainted with the national system and legislation on the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities, as well as measures aimed at fulfillment of the rights of handicapped persons in the country.
Special attention was paid to the implementation of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the Optional Protocol, as well as prospects for the development of cooperation between Turkmenistan and the United States in this area.
The interlocutors emphasized that legislative framework is consistently improving in Turkmenistan aimed at the expansion of support systems for people with disabilities, and the work continues on further advancement of human rights for people with disabilities.
During the meeting, the priorities of collaboration on the protection of the rights of people with disabilities within the framework of the “C5+1” format were outlined.
