Key aspects of the Turkmen-Chinese strategic partnership were discussed
On May 27, 2026, a meeting was held in New York between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs of the CPC Central Committee, and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China, Wang Yi.
At the beginning of the meeting, the head of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy agency congratulated his Chinese counterpart on the successful holding of the United Nations Security Council high-level open debate. The Chinese side expressed gratitude to the Turkmen delegation for participating in the event.
The parties reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthening the comprehensive strategic partnership between Turkmenistan and the People’s Republic of China. It was noted that under current international conditions, special importance is attached to supporting multilateralism, observing the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, and strengthening the central role of the United Nations.
It was emphasized that regular contacts at the highest and high levels are a key factor in the dynamic development of bilateral relations and the strengthening of mutual trust.
In this regard, the parties highlighted the importance of the visit to the People’s Republic of China in March of this year by the National Leader of the Turkmen people and Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow, as well as his meeting with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping, which gave additional impetus to the development of Turkmen-Chinese cooperation.
The significance of the April visit to Turkmenistan by Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and First Vice Premier of the State Council of China, Ding Xuexiang, was also emphasized. During the visit, prospects for further expanding bilateral cooperation, particularly in the energy sector, were discussed.
The parties noted the high level of political mutual understanding and trust, as well as the progressive development of practical cooperation across a broad range of areas.
Special attention during the talks was paid to cooperation in the energy sector, especially in the gas industry, where issues related to the further advancement of joint projects and the expansion of long-term partnership were discussed.
The prospects for cooperation in trade and economic, innovation and technological, as well as cultural and humanitarian spheres were also reviewed.
The high effectiveness of cooperation between Turkmenistan and China within the framework of the United Nations was separately emphasized. The parties confirmed their readiness to further strengthen coordination at international platforms and to continue mutual support for the initiatives and proposals of the two countries.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the parties reaffirmed their mutual commitment to continuing close cooperation in order to practically implement the agreements reached and further strengthen the strategic partnership.
