Towards the Implementation of the UN General Assembly Resolution “Year of International Law, 2028,” Initiated by Turkmenistan
On August 2, 2026, a conference was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan dedicated to the adoption by the United Nations General Assembly of the resolution “Year of International Law, 2028,” initiated by Turkmenistan.
The event was attended by the leadership and staff members of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, researchers and faculty members of the Turkmenistan Institute of State, Law, and Democracy, Magtymguly Turkmen State University, the International University for the Humanities and Development, the Institute of International Relations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as university students.
As is well known, during his address at the anniversary session of the UN General Assembly, President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov proposed declaring 2028 as the Year of International Law.
The unanimous adoption on July 24 of this year, at the 106th plenary meeting of the current session of the UN General Assembly, of the resolution “Year of International Law, 2028,” marked a significant achievement in the foreign policy of Turkmenistan. The document was co-sponsored by 78 states.
In his address at the conference, Deputy Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan R. Meredov once again emphasized the international significance of the adopted resolution and called for the active implementation of measures aimed at fulfilling its provisions.
These measures were presented for consideration to President Serdar Berdimuhamedov at the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers of Turkmenistan held the previous day and were approved by the leadership.
This marks the beginning of a series of measures to implement this resolution, including the development of a draft National Action Plan for 2026 – 2028 and the National Concept on “International Law and Permanent of Neutrality Turkmenistan”.
It was noted at the conference that the adoption of this resolution once again reflects Turkmenistan’s firm commitment to the principles of statehood, justice, and the rule of law.
Speakers emphasized that by adhering to the principles of permanent neutrality, peaceful coexistence, and good-neighborliness, Turkmenistan has earned high standing both regionally and globally. Being a party to fundamental international legal documents, Turkmenistan continues to make a significant contribution to maintaining regional and global stability and security.
The congratulations addressed to President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Hero-Arkadag, on the adoption by the UN General Assembly of the resolution “Year of International Law, 2028” were expressed during the conference.
