International Conference “Demographic Processes and Sustainable Development: Contemporary Challenges and International Experience”

On October 7, 2026, the international conference “Demographic Processes and Sustainable Development: Contemporary Challenges and International Experience” was held in the National Tourist Zone “Avaza”.

The meeting was attended by the leadership and representatives from the parliaments, relevant ministries and agencies of Turkmenistan, CIS countries, Saudi Arabia, and Türkiye, as well as experts of specialized UN agencies.

It was noted in the statements of the Turkmen side that under the leadership of President Serdar Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan pursues a scientifically grounded, socially oriented policy that regards the individual – including his or her life, rights, and dignity –as the highest value.

Turkmenistan engages in fruitful cooperation with specialized United Nations agencies, primarily the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the UNDP, and UNICEF. Joint efforts with these agencies aim to improve systems for collecting and analyzing demographic indicators, monitor the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, and facilitate the exchange of global best practices in the fields of population and development.

During the forum, special attention was paid to scientifically grounded methods for managing demographic processes and integrating them into long-term socio-economic plans. Speakers emphasized that effective solutions require a thorough analysis of population structure and key indicators.

The conference addressed the productive use of population and housing census data to establish an information base for public administration. Specialists from statistical agencies and UNFPA experts discussed the potential for applying modern digital technologies to the collection and processing of raw data. Forum participants also examined issues regarding the balance between demographic growth and the development of the national labor market.

During the conference, views were exchanged on improving the legal and institutional framework in the sphere of demography. Legal professionals and international experts discussed ways to align national legislation with international conventions and UN recommendations.

Expressing sincere gratitude to the Turkmen side for the excellent arrangements, forum participants voiced their confidence that the scientific approaches discussed would provide a powerful impetus for the further improvement of state policy in this area.

A Final document was adopted at the conclusion of the conference.
