President Serdar Berdimuhamedov Participated in the Leaders’ Summit at the Conference on Biological Diversity

On October 16, 2026, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov participated in the Leaders’ Summit held in the Republic of Armenia as part of the Conference on Biological Diversity.

Having concluded his visit to a neighboring country, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov traveled from Baku to the Republic of Armenia to attend the Leaders’ Summit.

The presidential aircraft landed at Yerevan International Airport, where the distinguished guest from Turkmenistan was warmly welcomed by officials from the Republic of Armenia and members of the official delegation from Turkmenistan.

The Head of State’s motorcade then proceeded to the Meridian Expo Center, the venue for the Summit.

Organized within the framework of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity, the Leaders’ Summit in Yerevan aims to consolidate the global community’s efforts toward protecting natural ecosystems.

The major forum was attended by the UN Secretary-General, various heads of state and government, leaders of environmental organizations, UN representatives, and international experts.

Upon his arrival at the Summit venue, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov was warmly greeted by the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan, and UN Secretary-General António Guterres. A joint photograph was also taken. Following the official group photograph of the heads of delegation, the Leaders' Summit—held within the framework of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity—commenced its proceedings.

The agenda for this high-level meeting included the protection of ecosystems and biodiversity, the financing of environmental initiatives, and preparations for the main program of the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17).

In his address, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov expressed his sincere gratitude to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, Nikol Pashinyan, for organizing the Summit, for the hospitality extended, and for creating the conditions necessary for productive work. It was noted that this high-level meeting serves as an excellent opportunity to reaffirm the collective political will of nations to preserve the planet's biodiversity and to transition from existing commitments to concrete, practical actions.

"Turkmenistan consistently supports the goals and principles of the UN Convention on Biological Diversity and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We operate from the premise that the loss of biodiversity, climate change, desertification, and land degradation are interconnected challenges that directly impact the environmental security and sustainable development of nations," the Head of State said.

Emphasizing the importance of maximizing the potential of the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and international environmental mechanisms, President Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted that significant attention is being devoted to cooperation with UNESCO regarding the preservation of natural heritage and the advancement of scientific research. A clear example of how international cooperation facilitates the preservation of unique ecosystems is the inclusion of natural sites in Turkmenistan as part of the transnational World Heritage property "Turanian deserts of the temperate zone."

"During the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, Turkmenistan will continue to promote initiatives aimed at strengthening international cooperation in the areas of environmental security and climate resilience," the head of state said.

Furthermore, it was noted that the country advocates for the establishment of an "Ashgabat Climate Dialogue"—an open, multilateral platform designed for regular political and expert engagement, the advancement of practical initiatives, and the strengthening of international partnerships.

Particular importance is placed on combating desertification and enhancing the resilience of arid regions to the impacts of climate change. In this regard, Turkmenistan is promoting an initiative to establish a Regional Center for Combating Desertification for the countries of Central Asia.

These efforts are viewed as a vital component of comprehensive international endeavors to preserve ecosystems, ensure the rational use of natural resources, and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.

As President Serdar Berdimuhamedov stated, Turkmenistan firmly believes that global environmental objectives cannot be met without taking into account the interests and specific needs of developing countries, including landlocked nations.

“Multilateral cooperation mechanisms—including South-South cooperation—are intended to play a significant role in this regard, as they allow for the pooling of the experience, knowledge, and capabilities of states in pursuit of shared environmental goals,” the President of Turkmenistan continued.

He expressed his confidence that the upcoming 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Biological Diversity would provide fresh momentum for fulfilling existing commitments and strengthening international partnerships.

Reaffirming Turkmenistan’s readiness for constructive engagement with all interested nations and international organizations, the head of state noted that combining political will, scientific expertise, and practical resources would help preserve the planet’s natural heritage for the benefit of both present and future generations.

President Serdar Berdimuhamedov’s address was followed with great attention.

The Yerevan Declaration was adopted at the conclusion of the summit.

Following the completion of his working visit to the Republic of Armenia, the head of state proceeded to Yerevan International Airport, from where he departed for homeland.

Some time later, the presidential aircraft arrived at the Ashgabat International airport, where the head of state was warmly welcomed by officials from our country.
