Meeting of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan with the President of the 80th Session of the UN General Assembly
On May 28, 2026, a meeting took place in New York between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Rashid Meredov, and the President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly, Annalena Baerbock.
During the meeting, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan informed about the implementation of Turkmenistan’s priority areas within the framework of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, covering issues of international politics and security, sustainable development, the climate agenda, and humanitarian cooperation.
The Foreign Minister emphasized Turkmenistan’s commitment to the principles of multilateral diplomacy, strengthening the central coordinating role of the United Nations, and enhancing the effectiveness of the General Assembly as a key international mechanism for ensuring peace, security, and sustainable development.
Special attention was paid to Turkmenistan’s initiatives in the field of preventive diplomacy, the promotion of international law, the development of a culture of dialogue and trust in international relations, as well as the activities of the United Nations Regional Centre for Preventive Diplomacy for Central Asia in Ashgabat. In this context, particular emphasis was placed on the initiative of the President of Turkmenistan to proclaim 2028 as the International Year of Law, aimed at strengthening the role of legal mechanisms in maintaining peace and stability.
The parties also reviewed issues related to the implementation of the UN Decade of Sustainable Transport for 2026–2035, the climate and environmental agenda, including Turkmenistan’s initiatives to establish regional climate centers and promote the Caspian Environmental Initiative. In this context, the significance of the outcomes of the Third United Nations Conference on Landlocked Developing Countries (LLDC), held in Avaza, was emphasized.
In the context of humanitarian cooperation, the sides discussed issues related to the empowerment of women and youth, the promotion of the “Women, Peace and Security” and “Youth, Peace and Security” agendas, as well as the development of regional dialogue and cooperation in these areas.
President of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly Annalena Baerbock welcomed Turkmenistan’s role in promoting multilateral cooperation, supporting the role of the United Nations and the General Assembly, implementing the Sustainable Development Goals, and advancing the international transport agenda.
Annalena Baerbock noted that Turkmenistan’s achievements and practical experience in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals and other international initiatives are regarded within the United Nations as a positive example of effectively advancing the global sustainable development agenda.
During the meeting, the importance of the United Nations General Assembly Resolution “Permanent Neutrality of Turkmenistan,” adopted on May 20, 2026, was also highlighted. The parties emphasized the significance of this document for further strengthening Turkmenistan’s international standing and promoting the principles of peace, trust, and constructive international cooperation.
The interlocutors also exchanged views on current international and regional issues, emphasizing the importance of strengthening trust, dialogue, and constructive international engagement.
